OMBA from time to time has created policies to guide its actions. The City of Omaha often contacts OMBA about permit requests it receives for events, street vendors and street performers. The following policies guide the OMBA in responding to these city requests.

OMBA has also created policies for member use of the OMBA mailing list and availability of Old Market Historical Plaques.

OMBA members in good standing are encouraged to use the Old Market logo in their advertising and on their printed materials including brochures and business cards. The Old Market logo may also be used by OMBA members for commercial use by payment of the license fee. See the OMBA Old Market Logo Policy for more information.

The OMBA participates in various planning processes to further the preservation, development and marketing of the Old Market.

  • Old Market Graphic Identification Plan (prepared by Marty Shukert). This plan was created at the request of OMBA as a guide to our efforts to create a visual identity and appropriate wayfinding signage. Some results from this planning process are the Sidewalk Directories and the Historical Walking Tour Plaques. This plan continues to guide OMBA responding to grant-writing opportunities.
  • 11th Street Place Game. In November, 2002, OMBA and Omaha by Design (then, Lively Omaha) sponsored a planning process for businesses, residents and property owners. This was Omaha by Design’s initial project, and the purpose was to brainstorm new ideas for the 11th Street corridor as a pedestrian link between residences and businesses of the Old Market and the Gene Leahy Mall and Holland Performing Arts Center.

This planning process led to Omaha by Design undertaking a major planning process for the Mall and a “new vision” multi-million dollar improvement plan. A demonstration project in 2005 removed walls along Farnam near 13th Street. Implementation of this vision is a major goal of Omaha by Design.
  • Old Market Streetscape Guidelines. In response to requests for guidance about appropriate and inappropriate sidewalk seating, planters, trash receptacles, trees and other “streetscape” features in the Old Market, the City of Omaha Planning Department is in process of preparing “guidelines for businesses and property owners. Not intended to be regulations, the guidelines will provide good and bad examples. Throughout the process, OMBA has been given opportunity for input into creation of the guidelines. This input has resulted in the strengthening of some concepts and weakening of others. When complete, the guidelines will be published here.
  • Old Market Historic District Guidelines. Five blocks of the Old Market are designated as an historic district and are subject to regulations and the Landmarks Commission. Those blocks are 10th to 12th Streets from Jackson to Harney and 12th to 13th Street from Howard to Harney. These regulations are not inappropriate in other areas of the Old Market, but they do not have the force of law.
